It always says on the box of tampons that they are flushable, but my toilet keeps clogging. So are tampons really flushable or not?
NO! Tampons are not flushable – according to multiple professional plumbers, landlords and building maintenance pros we asked. Every plumbing expert we asked (and there were many) answered the question the same. With an unequivocal and resounding NO. Do not flush tampons!
Tampon packaging may say tampons are flushable, but that just means they won’t necessarily clog most toilets. In reality, any plumber will tell you to NEVER flush tampons because they wreak havoc on most sewer lines and septic systems, especially in older homes or homes with trees nearby (tree roots tend to get into sewer lines and catch debris like tampons causing major clogs down the line.)
So do yourself, and your plumber, a favor. Just throw your tampons in the trash. You don’t want to get a sewer backup in your basement, call a plumber and pay a hefty fee only to have an in-depth conversation with him about your tampon usage and why it is important to NOT flush tampons.
